  • Instructor Spotlights!

Meet Kai and Abel! Two of our Climbing Instructors who have some really exciting things to share with the Session Community!

    KAI S.

Originally from San Rafael, he discovered his passion for climbing thanks to his colleagues at a summer camp near Mt. Hood, Oregon back in 2010. Since then, he has immersed himself in the climbing world, starting with guiding at Smith Rock State Park and continues to climb passionately today, holding an AMGA CWI certification.

In recent years, he has developed an extensive curriculum focused on teaching route reading to climbers of all levels—a course he’s thrilled to offer here! Route reading is the art of analyzing a climb, understanding the required body positions and movements for efficient climbing, even before touching the holds. This multi-week course goes beyond the classroom, featuring self-directed exercises, valuable take-home resources, and engaging reading and viewing assignments after each session. While ideal for beginners and intermediates, there’s valuable insight for climbers at every level!

    ABEL

Originally from Havana, Cuba, Abel found his passion for climbing after his time at Humboldt State University, where he studied Art and Philosophy before graduating in 2011. Since then, he’s been traveling and climbing as much as money and time would allow! He’s been all across the globe, from Thailand, Cambodia, Nepal, Spain, Canada and all throughout the US, just to name a few.

With 18 years of climbing experience under his belt, Abel joined Session almost two years ago, teaching Lead climbing, Top rope, as well as route setting, and outdoor guiding! As a certified American Mountain Guide single pitch instructor, he developed Session’s first Gym to Crag class, merging his love for climbing and the outdoors with his dedication to sharing knowledge and creating a vibrant climbing community in Sonoma County. This class is a great opportunity to learn the essential information needed to set up outside!
