Gym Overview

Session Climbing is opening its first location in early 2022. The gym is located in Santa Rosa, California, and is a 23,000 square-foot, ground-up build. Session will have indoor climbing, traditional and studio fitness, and a lounge along with other amenities. Programming will include climbing and fitness instruction, youth climbing teams, corporate and non-professional groups, and studio fitness classes. Session will regularly host events like member appreciation activities and climbing competitions.

Position Overview

This is a part-time position with potential for full-time employment if the candidate is able to assume a complimentary role, such as Head Coach. The Head Setter is responsible for creating a climbing environment that is safe, exciting, and inspiring. The Head Setter must be comfortable managing a small team and be detail oriented. They need to be self-motivated, an excellent communicator, and a problem solver. They need to be passionate about quality, creativity, inclusivity, and collaboration.

Applicant Overview

Applicants must be ready to start work by February 2022, and be able to offer a two-year commitment. Applicants should meet the position qualifications and must be able to collaborate on creating a routesetting program with the owners.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Ability to train and supervise a small staff

  • Manage hold and equipment budgets

  • 3+ years setting experience

  • Knowledgeable about work-at-height protocols

  • Ability to set and forerun up to 5.13 and V10

  • Familiar with USAC rules/regulations


Responsibilities

Routesetting

  • Establish policies and procedures for all stages of the setting process

  • Create and maintain a culture of workplace safety

  • Create and maintain a setting culture that emphasizes variety, creativity, and member experience

  • Create and maintain a program of setter development that emphasizes both rope climbing and bouldering

  • Set up and maintain the routesetting room and routesetting equipment

  • Set up and maintain the training wall, campus board, and hangboards

  • Equip and maintain rope and bouldering walls

  • Plan initial set

  • Set routes and boulder problems, forerun routes and boulder problems, and do wash

  • Stay current with trends and innovations in routesetting and routesetting products

  • Stay current with standards of work-at-height practices

  • Ability to regularly lift 45lbs.+ as part of workday

Management 

  • Perform regular safety inspections of ropes, auto belays, wall hardware, flooring, and setting equipment

  • Maintain a work culture of professionalism, inclusivity, growth, and individual and collective responsibility

  • Regularly provide informal, on-the-job feedback to all routesetters

  • Conduct regularly scheduled formal evaluations of all routesetters

  • Create, communicate, and update setting short-term and long-term goals for the routesetting crew

  • Facilitate development and training for the setting team through apprenticeships, workshops, and work-at-height training

  • Report regularly to and work with the general manager on safety, ordering and budgeting, training strategies, and routesetter evaluations and performance issues

  • Participate in hiring of routesetters

  • Plan, organize, and manage competitions, member leagues, and training camps

The Membership Manager is responsible for the growth and retention of Session’s membership through creative and evolving approaches to outreach and engagement with current and prospective members. The position involves managing email requests and questions from members, conceiving of and organizing small and large events at the gym, and a significant amount of data analysis and reporting on membership.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee onboarding process for new members, including assembling welcome packets, managing paperwork, and following up directly with members

  • Provide customer service for members on billing, questions, suggestions, and complaints

  • Create and conduct online member surveys

  • Create and run membership promotions

  • Conceive of and organize small recurring events (weekly, monthly, and quarterly)

  • Help plan, promote, and run big events like climbing competitions

Gym Overview

Session Climbing is the Bay Area’s first ground-up gym. The gym is 23,000 square feet with 4,000 square-feet of bouldering terrain (14’ walls), 13,000 square-feet of rope climbing (34’ – 48’ walls), and a 1,000 square-foot training area with a 12’x12’ Kilter board, a campus board, and hangboards. Climbing terrain ranges from slab to over 50 degrees overhanging.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior routesetting experience

  • Experience working at height

  • The ability to set and forerun up to V5

  • The ability to set and forerun up to 5.12

Responsibilities

  • Adherence to safe routesetting practices, such as: use of PPE, proper ladder usage, and adherence to work-at-height protocols

  • Willing to set routes and boulder problems with equal commitment to quality and creativity

  • Willing to forerun routes and boulder problems with equal commitment to making changes as needed

  • Set for competitions and events (includes occasional weekends)

  • Assist with stripping and washing holds

  • Assist with wall maintenance

  • Assist with autobelay, anchor, draw, and rope inspection/replacement

  • Help introduce fresh ideas and concepts during setting days

  • During forerunning, change others’ climbs and your own to make them more comfortable and more accessible to Session members

  • Clean and keep organized the setting room

  • Maintain and keep organized setting kits

  • Engage with Session’s members and day users

  • Maintain a work culture of professionalism

Session’s Routesetters Must

  • Understand and adhere to safety protocols

  • Develop and broaden their setting for Session members
